The starter motor receives electricity from the solenoid, which subsequently spins the flywheel. Internal shielding is built into the starter to keep any sparks or stray energy out of the bell housing or bilge, where gasoline fumes may be present. Another advantage of this shielding is that it maintains moisture and pollutants out of the back half of the starting motor.
