How to Select Patio Door Handles

If you're looking to replace or upgrade your patio door handles, there are a couple of points to consider to make an informed purchase. There are four types to consider, each with its own design profile and measurement approach. Here's a discussion of each:

Hook type surface mounted handle sets

Most patio door handles in this category have reversible hook latches to enable left and right handling. Many can also be modified to be key-operable from the outside. As far as measuring one is concerned, measure the distance between the mounting holes and then check the height of the latching hook. Measure from the face of the door to the underside of the hook. A best-seller is the CRL C1252  black surface mounted hook style handle with a die cast inside and an outside pull.

Clamp type handle sets

Clamp type handle sets are commonly used on aluminum doors. Depending on the model, a clamp type handle may have an extended clamp reach or a flexible spring-loaded clamp. At the time of replacement, always look at the clamp profile when the clamp is in the locked position.

Surface mounted handle sets are reversible. The thumb lever that actuates the lock is either centered on the handle or the offset lower, to keep the thumb from pressing the thumb lever. Exterior pulls can be modified to accept a key housing.

Flush mount handle sets

Flush mount handle sets are available in a variety of locking hook lengths. Larger flush handle sets from CRL – such as the C1030 - operate mortise locks within the door stile. As far as latching hooks are concerned, there are two common styles. One is positioned lower in the latch, while the other type is located higher in the latch body with the hook pointed down. For instance, the C1043  has one inside latch, outside pull, hook assortment, keeper and installation fasteners. The non-keyed, reversible latch has a black diecast construction that fits flush lock cut- outs.
