Gorilla Glass Becomes A Major Player in The Automotive Industry

Remember when we talked about how amazing Corning's Gorilla Glass is? In one of our previous posts, we talked about how Gorilla Glass 5 is the industry standard to prevent smartphone screen breakage. However, the smartphone industry isn't the sole interested party when it comes to Corning's Gorilla Glass. The automotive industry has also considered the potential of the chemically tempered glass.

A particular stakeholder in the automotive industry, Saint-Gobain Sekurit, was the first to approach Corning, which resulted in a joint venture between the two companies. The companies have teamed up to determine the feasibility of mass producing Corning's Gorilla Glass for automotive use. Saint-Gobain Sekurit, a leading manufacturer of automotive glazing, first became interested in Gorilla Glass due to its light weight and strength but know it's expensive to make.

Saint-Gobain Sekurit's primary concern is in the increase of glass being used in vehicles as the latest windshield and sunroof trends require more glass. For example, panoramic sunroofs may as well comprise the entirety of the vehicle's roof. Applying Gorilla Glass in this quantity could prove to be inconceivably expensive.

Nevertheless, the joint venture between Corning and Saint-Gobain Sekurit proves to be a step forward. As Gorilla Glass protects our smartphones, we look forward to having it protect our vehicles.
