A temperature gauge works by transmitting a low-amperage current from the gauge's meter to the ground via a variable-resistance sending unit, with variations in pressure, temperature, and other factors, the resistance of the sending units increases or decreases. The amount of current permitted to flow through the sender to ground changes as the sender's resistance changes, and the meter deflects, indicating the temperature.
