A low-amperage current is sent from the gauge's meter to the ground via a variable-resistance transmitting mechanism. With variations in pressure, temperature, and other factors, the resistance of the sending units rises or falls. The amount of current permitted to flow through the sender to the ground varies as the sender's resistance varies and the meter deflects, indicating the fuel level.
