If this insulated connection were to fail, the retaining nut is captured by the stainless steel body of the fitting and the integrity of the backstay is maintained. It then can be re-tensioned to take up the slack caused by the failed socket and repaired at a later time. An ideal installation requires two insulators with one aloft 3 ft from the masthead and one 7 ft of the deck with 35 ft or greater of distance between insulators.
