A washer is a mechanical component used in conjunction with a screw fastener, such as a bolt and nut, to protect the screw from loosening the load from the nut or bolt head over a greater area. Other sorts of washers are employed to keep things from loosening. Tab washers are a type of lock washer that has one or more notches or tabs on the inside or outside to hold the nut concerning the connecting bolt or stud. The tabs can be bent or engaged into keyways or slots in the linked exterior to provide a positive locking surface.
