Prepping your old hickory cabinets with a clear finish for staining involves a few key steps to ensure a smooth and even application: Clean the Surface: Start by cleaning the cabinets thoroughly to remove any dirt, grease, or grime. A mixture of denatured alcohol and water (50:50) works well for this. Sand the Surface: Lightly sand the cabinets with 220-grit sandpaper to scuff the clear finish. This helps the new stain adhere better. Be sure to sand in the direction of the wood grain. Remove Dust: Wipe down the cabinets with a damp cloth to remove any sanding dust. This ensures a clean surface for staining. Apply a Pre-Stain Conditioner: Hickory wood can be tricky to stain evenly due to its dense grain. Applying a pre-stain conditioner helps to ensure a more uniform stain application. Stain the Cabinets: Once the conditioner is dry, you can apply the Minwax 108200000-XCP4 Interior Wood Stain. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the best results
