Cast iron pans retain and radiate extremely high temperatures across their rim and handles. If the screen's frame trim or soft-touch handle grip (such as silicone, vinyl, or plastic coatings) came into direct contact with the hot edge, or if open flames flared around the sides of the pan, the heat exceeded the material's melting threshold. High-heat cast iron cooking requires fine mesh splatter screens made entirely of 100% metal/stainless steel with no rubberized parts near the heat source.
