From Modest Beginnings

It started in the early 1900s when Samuel Kersten Sr. founded a small plumbing contracting business in Chicago. He was a shrewd businessman with exceptional mechanical aptitude. By the late 1920s, he was able to build his plumbing company into one of the largest contracting firms in Chicago. His primary interest was in developing a higher-quality faucet. He was highly dissatisfied with the quality of faucets available during his time. To make them better, he would incorporate two unique features. The first was to incorporate all of the working components of the faucet into a self-contained cartridge, giving it an unlimited lifespan. The second was to design the cartridge with an adjustable orifice to control the water flow through the valve. This volume control device, the Water Saver, would eventually become the company's namesake.

Continuous Improvement

While Samuel Kersten Sr. was busy working on "water saving" faucets, his son Samuel Kersten Jr. went to serve his country in World War II. After returning from the war, the two Kerstens decided to close the contracting company and start a new company to focus exclusively on manufacturing the new faucet line. At first, they introduced a line of commercial and institutional faucets, which met with little success. Sam Kersten Jr. immediately perceived an opportunity to sell his products based on their higher quality. He introduced the "WaterSaver" line of laboratory faucets and valves. The company's top products include vacuum breaker repair kits, index cap "gas," and angle vacuum breaker.

The Big Break

The first break for the company came in 1952 when the E.I. DuPont Co. commenced a construction program for which WaterSaver products were specified. DuPont'sDuPont's requirements took the company approximately six months to complete. Completing this project for a distinguished user gave the company credibility in its industry. The revenue from this project enabled the company to buy much-needed machinery and raw materials, and WaterSaver was launched into its future.
