Mr. Ishikawa founded Zebra Pen Corporation in New York in August 1982. The name Zebra is as unique as the products the company sells. Zebra Pen Corporation is a 30-plus-year-old subsidiary of Zebra Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan, founded over 100 years ago. Leveraging the knowledge and experience within writing and advancements in ink technologies, the brand proudly offers an extensive line of quality writing instruments ranging from its classic Steel Barrelled Retractable ballpoint pen to its ground-breaking two-in-one StylusPen.
Our Trademark
The brand adopted the Zebra trademark in 1914. The legend goes that Mr. Ishikawa, founder of Zebra Co. Ltd., wanted a company name that would be memorable and suitable for their export business to other countries. So, he took an English/Japanese dictionary and, opening it in Japanese style, i.e., from the back, started with the “Z” words. He stopped at “Zebra.”
The Company’s Logo
During his research, Mr. Ishikawa found that zebras are quite gentle animals with a strong family herding instinct. This was an essential attribute since he wanted to build a business where customers and employees were all part of a family-like culture. Also, the fact that the Zebra logo looks like it is decorated with large calligraphic pen strokes might have appealed to the visual image he was seeking.
