Building a new boat or replacing a tired bank that just won't hold a charge? Marine Batteries have to do one of three things, and the trick is matching a boat marine battery to the job. So which one do you actually need? If you're cranking an outboard, you want a starting battery built for short, high-amp bursts. If you're running electronics, fridges, and lights overnight at anchor, you want a deep cycle. And if you're pushing a trolling motor for a full day on the water, you want a deep cycle bank wired for the voltage your motor calls for. The chemistry choice comes next, and that's where it gets interesting.
You've got three real options on most boats today, and each one has a sweet spot.
Flooded lead-acid is the cheapest way in, and it still works fine if you don't mind topping off the water and keeping it upright. AGM costs more but takes vibration and partial-state charging in stride, which is why it's the default on most modern setups. Lithium (LiFePO4) is the pricey one upfront, but it'll double your cycle life and shave serious weight off the boat. Is it worth it? Depends on how much you're on the water.
Match your CCA to whatever your engine's manual calls for on a cold morning, and size your house bank to about 3x your daily amp-hour draw. That keeps you above 50% on flooded and AGM, or 80% depth-of-discharge on lithium. Sounds like a lot? It's not, once you add up the fridge, the chartplotter, and the lights.
One thing pros don't skip on any marine electrical install: every battery needs a switch and a fuse within 7 inches of the positive terminal per ABYC E-11. Don't shortcut this. Pair the battery with the right battery charger for marine setups, a properly rated battery switch, and the correct AWG marine wire for the run length.
Whether it's a single Group 24 for the bass rig or a pallet of Group 31 AGMs for a charter fleet, DK Hardware has got you covered. Optima, Interstate, Trojan, Odyssey, VMAX, and Battle Born all live here, and a bundled marine battery with charger combo will save you a trip if you're outfitting from scratch.
